SIMS is in EXPERIMENTAL MODE. First, anyone that registers as a SIMS user AND whose name appears on the current Bowers Listing, will be automatically given 'player/rater' status, allowing all players to be raters (this is part of the experiement).

The next part of the experiment is the implementation of non-stop, round-the-clock, 24/7 rating. In other words, instead of being rated once per year, you can be rated at any time by any other player. Further, the moment someone rates you, their submission is used to recalculate the players' current rating, and the new rating is instantly available to anyone visiting the site.

Obviously a constantly changing rating would make things a bit difficult in tournaments. An 'Administration' page is currently being developed that will allow the administrator to set various rules regarding rating submission, including the release times (yearly, semi-annually, quarterly, etc). Using a fully automated rating system opens doors to more options and more areas where rules will be necessary.

The rating input control was designed to make rating entry easy, and only allow valid values to be entered. Eventually, the software can do much more than simply ensure that the rating falls between -1.xx and 5.00, but can also warn of unreasonable ratings (like jumping a 3.32 to a -1.12).
