The 133 Club in Manteca, CA held it's 3rd Memorial Day tournament. The crowd was smaller than expected but all worked out great.
The amateur singles paid 2 places. Taking 1st was George Camara, and 2nd place went to Bob Crum. In the add-to-3 doubles, first place went to Linda Ritter and Lorraine Bingham, second went to Bob Crum and JR Noel, and 3rd went to Eddie Brayman and Jane Mourgos.
Given that we only had 6 teams for the pro doubles, we decided to do a true round robin (everybody plays everybody, 2/3 game matches. Two teams ended up with a 4-1 record. A playoff match decided the winner. The team of Joe Hudson and Nick Chaffin defeated Darrol Nelson and Don Cox as Nick Chaffin lagged a 4 in the 3rd game to win the match.
The Pro singles included 10 players. Don Cox battled his way through the losers bracket and won 4 straight games in the finals to take 1st place honors. 2nd place went to Nick Chaffin. Eddie Brayman took 3rd place.
The relatively small crowd at a tournament in which we have had over 40 or 50 players in the past brings to light a problem we are having in California tournaments. Tournaments in north, central, and southern California (as well as Oregon and Washington) are often held at the same time. There are other issues like satisfying the pro's vs amateurs and general tournament formats. I believe the key to solving these problems is a committee which would include representatives from all players in California, Washington, and Oregon. If you would like to be part of this committee or have suggestions, questions, or any comments regarding shuffleboard tournaments in California, Washington, Oregon) please send email to Eddie Brayman at etheb@aol.com.
